Active Design Guidelines

Jeffrey and his team led the creation of the groundbreaking and award-winning Active Design Guidelines, which were the result of an intensive multi-agency collaboration including Transportation and Health.  The guidelines, originally issued in 2010, presented a new planning approach to create streets and buildings that support and promote the physical health and well-being of residents.  A few years later, they led a subsequent study funded by the Center for Disease Control called Active Design: Shaping the Sidewalk Experience, which focused entirely on the sidewalk, a city’s most critical public space network.  Using the conceptual framework of the “sidewalk room”, they addressed the complexities of the policies, players and physical form of shaping the pedestrian experience and creating truly walkable streets and sidewalks.
